Custom foam profiles that damp vibration and noise under railway and tram track
Closed-cell crosslinked PE foam that absorbs vibration, protects the rail and stays durable in wet conditions, in the density your traffic and damping level call for. Designed with you from the choice of material to the qualified part, from pre-series to large series.
Technical foam for railway and tram track, from a Group with over 45 years of foam expertise
Foam under the rail absorbs the vibration and noise of passing trains and trams before they spread to the ground, nearby buildings and adjacent structures. It protects the rail and the track structure, helps keep the track stable and the rail fastenings durable, for more comfort on board and less disturbance for residents.
For those who build and run the track: infrastructure managers, urban transport authorities, track construction and maintenance contractors, and makers of track systems and rail fastenings. Rolling-stock builders and their suppliers get comfort foam, technical parts and shuttle boxes from the same Group.
- Closed-cell crosslinked PE foam: durable in wet conditions, back to shape after compression
- Density from 25 to 150 kg/m³, chosen for the damping your line requires
- Profiles cut to your drawing, from pre-series to large series
- The Cellutec Group: over 45 years of expertise and Europe's N°1 converter of technical foams, with 6 production sites in France and Romania
Cellutec for railways
Elastic PE strips under the rail absorb the vibration of passing trains and trams, so less of it reaches the ground and the buildings beside the line.
Closed cells keep the foam durable in wet conditions, and crosslinking brings it back to shape after each compression, under heavy, repeated loads.
From 25 to 150 kg/m³: lower densities for light insulation, higher ones for more compression resistance and damping, matched to heavy trains or light trams.
The Cellutec Group has already produced this type of PE rail-pad profile and cuts each one to the customer's drawing and density.
Foam for the track and the train: quieter lines, parts in their place
Under the track, PE strips and pads damp vibration and noise, and embedded tram rail sits on PE foam. In the train and the workshop: comfort foam for seats, shock-absorbing technical parts, shuttle boxes and storage foam for parts logistics.
Resilient Rail Strips & Pads
PE foam profiles that isolate the rail, damp vibration and noise, and shield it from external forces and debris.
Embedded Tram-Track Foam
PE foam the rail of embedded tram track sits on: it insulates the rail and reduces vibration, noise and structural stress.
Seat & Bench Comfort Foam
Comfort foam for seats and benches, cut to measure in the quality and firmness each seat needs.
Shock-Absorbing Technical Parts
IMPAXX™ parts that absorb impact energy at low weight, and technical parts in PE and EPDM cellular rubber, cut to your drawings.
Shuttle Boxes for Parts Logistics
Shuttle boxes made to order, to move parts between manufacturers and their equipment suppliers and through the workshops.
5S Storage Foam
Machined trays in rigid crosslinked PE foam that give every part its place in the workshop: rot-proof, waterproof and long-lasting.
Engineering depth behind every solution
Foam for the track and the train, from one Group.
Resilient strips and pads under the rail; comfort foam, technical parts and shuttle boxes for the rolling stock: one Group converts the foams for both, with a design office at every site. Fewer suppliers to manage, one design dialogue.

Multi-material engineering
Engineered foam, plastic cases and technical textiles combined into one protective system for each requirement.

Railway: frequently asked questions
Answers on what foam under the track does, the materials and densities used, rail profiles, the fire-safety standard for railway vehicles, rolling-stock parts, shuttle boxes and what to send for a quote.
What does foam under railway and tram track do?
Foam under the rail, also called a resilient strip, under-ballast mat or elastic pad, absorbs the vibration and noise of passing trains and trams before they spread to the ground and nearby buildings. It protects the track structure, spreads the load, helps keep the track stable and, on some tram lines, insulates the rail against stray currents.
Which materials are used under railway and tram rails?
Recycled rubber granulates (typically 300 to 800 kg/m³), closed-cell polyurethane foam (often 150 to 600 kg/m³ for under-ballast mats), vulcanized rubber (above 800 kg/m³) and crosslinked closed-cell polyethylene foam (25 to 150 kg/m³). Cellutec converts crosslinked PE foam, whose closed cells keep it durable in wet conditions.
How is the density of a resilient strip chosen?
By the environment, the type of traffic (heavy trains or light trams), the noise and vibration insulation required and the service life expected. For crosslinked PE, densities run from 25 to 150 kg/m³: lower densities for light insulation, higher ones for more compression resistance and damping. Density also affects the cost.
Has Cellutec produced foam profiles for railway track?
Yes. The Cellutec Group has already produced PE rail-pad profiles, used in railway construction to isolate the rail, damp vibration and noise, and protect it from external forces and debris. Send your profile drawing or a sample, the density or damping you need and your quantities, and we will propose the material.
Which fire-safety standard applies to foam in railway vehicles?
EN 45545, the European standard for the fire safety of railway vehicles, which covers the materials used in them. If your seat foam or technical part must meet it, state the requirement in your inquiry, with the part and where it sits in the vehicle, so the material can be checked against it.
Which foam parts does the Cellutec Group make for rolling stock?
The Cellutec Group designs parts for the automotive, railway and boating sectors: comfort foam for seats and benches, technical parts in crosslinked or non-crosslinked PE and EPDM cellular rubber, IMPAXX™ parts that absorb shocks, and parts for sound and thermal insulation. Send the part or its drawing with your inquiry.
Can Cellutec make shuttle boxes and storage foam for railway workshops?
Yes. The Cellutec Group makes shuttle boxes to order that move parts between manufacturers and their equipment suppliers and through the workshops, and machines 5S storage trays in rigid crosslinked PE foam: rot-proof, waterproof and long-lasting. Send the parts, their size and weight and your quantities with your inquiry.
What do I need to send for a quote?
Send your profile drawing or a sample, the density or damping you need, the type of traffic and the service life expected, your quantities and your timelines. For a rolling-stock part, send the part or its drawing and any fire-safety requirement. We will propose a solution from there.
